Rava fried mushroom or mushroom rava fry is a Goan mushroom recipe in which mushrooms are marinated with spice powders, coated with spiced semolina and rice flour and shallow fried. This Goan mushroom appetizer recipe is very easy to cook and can be served for lunch or dinner.

Rava Fried Mushroom

In goa, we make different types of rava fried dishes. For the vegetarians we make recipes like onion rava fry, lady finger rava fry and taro root rava fry and for the non-vegetarian we make recipes with fish like mackerel rava fry, pomfret rava fry, prawns rava fry, chicken rava fry, etc.

This mushroom shallow fry recipe can be easily made with simple ingredients available at home. If rice flour is not available, you may just coat the marinated mushroom with rava or semolina.

You might be interested in other mushroom recipes like mushroom pepper fry, mushroom xacuti and mushroom chilli.

Some Goans donโ€™t eat fish on certain weekdays and on those days, they make rava fried dishes as an appetizer with lunch. That is the reason why you will find most of the vegetables being rava fried in Goa.

Some more rava fried recipes which you can try are:

  • Yam rava fry
  • Raw banana rava fry
  • Brinjal rava fry
  • Bread fruit rava fry
  • Baby corn rava fry
  • Ridge gourd rava fry
  • Potato rava fry

Ingredients to make mushroom rava fry:

  • Mushroom: Any type of mushroom like button mushroom, oyster mushroom or wild mushroom can be used in making the recipe.
  • Spice powders: Red chili powder and turmeric powder are the two spice powders used in this recipe.
  • Flour: Semolina and rice flour are the two types of flour used in this recipe.

How to cook mushroom fry with rava or semolina?

  • Wash the mushrooms and pat dry.
  • Cut them into halves lengthwise including the stem.
  • If the mushroom is big, then make 4 pieces.
  • Sprinkle 1 tablespoon water on the mushrooms and then apply salt, turmeric and red chili powder and keep aside for 15 minutes.

For frying:

  • Mix the ingredients for coating on a flat plate i.e. rice flour, rava, pinch of salt, 1/4 teaspoon each of turmeric powder and red chili powder.
  • Coat the mushrooms in this spiced flour. Ensure that it is fully covered with rawa.
  • Heat a frying pan and drizzle 1 tablespoon oil. Add more if required.
  • Place the rava coated mushrooms on the pan and fry on low flame.
  • After 10 minutes turn them to the other side and fry for 10 more minutes.
  • You know they are done when they turn brown and crispy.

This mushroom dry fry can be served with jeera rice, Rawalpindi chole and salad. Mushroom fry can also be served with dal and rice especially when you are feeling bored to cook a side dish.
