Matar pulao also known as peas pulao is a quick and easy rice recipe. This is a no onion no garlic recipe and gets ready under 20 minutes. I made this one pot pulao in pressure cooker. But you can even cook this pulao on stove top or in a rice cooker or Instant pot.

matar pulao

Every year I buy the fresh peas, peel and freeze them. In this way I get to use peas through-out the year. This matar pulao can be made with fresh peas or frozen peas.  Apart from that, this is a wonderful dish for your kidโ€™s lunch box.

I have made a no onion no garlic peas pulao recipe which is tasty and mildly flavored. You may also try adding onion and garlic to the same recipe and make it flavorful. Best part is that this matar recipe can be made easily in a pressure cooker from start to finish.

These days green peas are in season and I make many recipes  with green peas like

  • Matar paneer
  • Sweet corn & peas pulao
  • Carrot & peas stir fry / Gajar matar ki subzi
  • Aloo gajar matar subzi
  • Carrot and peas sandwich
  • Green peas stir fry

Let us see the ingredients that go in making no onion no garlic green peas pulao recipe:

  • Rice: For best taste and aroma, always use Basmati rice to make any type of pulao. I have also used Basmati rice in this recipe. If it is not available you can use any type of long grain rice or bullet rice.
  • Green peas: Use fresh or frozen green peas to make this delicious pulao recipe. In winter season, fresh green peas are available so make the best use of them. However, you can use frozen green peas too. Just take the required quantity and thaw and use them in your peas recipe.
  • Spices: Different aromatic spices like cumin seeds, bay leaves, cardamom pods, cloves, black peppercorns, cinnamon and kasuri methi are used in this recipe. All these are easily available in any Indian/Asian grocery store.
  • Pulao masala: Little amount of pulao masala is added to this recipe. However, it is optional.
  • Ghee: Do use pure desi ghee or clarified butter to make this pulao tasty and flavorful. Addition of pure desi ghee takes this recipe to a different level. If ghee is unavailable, you can use any type of cooking oil.

how to make matar pulao

Steps to make peas pulao recipe without onion:

  • Wash the Basmati rice and keep aside for 15 minutes.
  • In a pressure cooker, add ghee.
  • After ghee gets heated, add the cumin seeds, bay leaves, cloves, black peppercorns, cinnamon and crushed cardamon pods.
  • Add the green peas and fry for 5 minutes.
  • Add the pulao masala and mix well.
Next step is to add the Basmati rice, so add washed Basmati rice, mix everything nicely and let it cook for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add 2 cups water, kasuri methi, salt to taste and mix well.
  • Close the pressure cooker and keep on the whistle/weight.
  • After 3 whistles turn off the cooker.
  • Open after cooling. Serve with raita/dal or eat as is.

Notes to keep in mind while making peas pulao recipe:

  • You might need to increase/decrease the number of whistles depending on the type of cooker you use. I used a 2-litre pressure cooker and hence took 3 whistles for 1 cup basmati rice.
  • Rice to water ration should always be 1:2 when cooking rice in pressure cooker. So, if you add 1.5 cups of rice, then add 3 cups of water.
  • Always use the same cup for measuring rice and water.

What side dish goes well with pulao?

You can serve any side dish with pulao like:

  •  Paneer butter masala
  • Capsicum curry
  • Egg curry
  • Goan style chili chicken
  • Paneer manchurian
  • Vegetable raita
  • Cucumber salad
  • Green chicken

peas pulao

You can modify this recipe by adding vegetables of your choice like carrot, green beans, bell pepper, sweet corn, etc. and this becomes a vegetable pulao. With different combination of vegetables and green peas you can try different veg pulao types.

You might also like to try jeera rice recipe or beetroot pulao or lemon rice which are also great options for your kidโ€™s lunchbox.
