Simple Breadfruit Subzi

This is the first time in my life that I have prepared breadfruit subzi. I had a similar type of subzi when I had gone with my family on an outing to Chikamagalur in Karnataka. We stayed in a homestay there and they always served us healthy and nutritious home cooked food. The best part was that they also ate what they cooked for us.  I had a similar type of subzi there. I could make out what all ingredients they had added to it.

This week when I went to do the weekly grocery shopping, I saw some breadfruits on the shelf. I picked up the smallest one with the intention to experiment with it. My hubby loves breadfruits. In Konkani we call it “Neerpanas”. They are available in plenty in this summer season. Before the season is over, just go and grab some and try some nutritious dishes.

Ingredients:
3 cups chopped breadfruit
1 medium sized finely chopped onion
2 green chilies
10 curry leaves
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
1 tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp grated coconut
Pinch of asafoetida
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoon oil

Procedure:
In a kadai/wok, add 2 tablespoon oil. Keep the flame on low.
When it heats, add mustard seeds and cover the kadai.
After the mustard flutters, add cumin seeds.
Then add asafoetida, curry leaves and green chilles.
Add onion and fry till it becomes pinkish.
Then add the chopped breadfruit and water and let it simmer for 20 minutes or till the breadfruit gets cooked. Add grated coconut and stir. Also all the water should dry up.
Keep stirring occasionally. Add salt to taste.
Serve with rice with a dash of love 🙂

I'm hearing about breadfruit for the first time really, no kidding!
Is it same as jackfruit? (*wondering*)
And those tiny balls – are those breadfruit seeds?

    Hi Nisha,

Breadfruits is similar to jackfruit. Looks same as jackfruit, but are smaller then that. You can google and check the same.
The small balls are thermacol balls 🙂
