breadfruit recipe

Breadfruit subzi or neerpanas bhaji is a vegan stir fry made with breadfruit and is a quick and easy vegetarian stir fry recipe. This breadfruit recipe is an authentic Goan style nirpanasachi bhaji.

breadfruit subzi

Neerpanas in English is breadfruit. Neerpanas is also known as fanas or jeev kadgi or Jee gujje in many places in South India.

Just like any other Indian stir fry, first onion is sautรฉed in tempering made of mustard seeds, cumin seeds and curry leaves and then breadfruit is added and cooked. Grated coconut is then added to this stir fry to make it an authentic Goan vegetarian recipe.

Ingredients needed to make breadfruit subzi or bhaji:

  • Breadfruit: Use fresh breadfruit or neerpanas in this recipe.
  • Onion: You can use any type of onion in this recipe. I prefer using red onion. To make a no onion no garlic recipe, simply do not add onion and proceed with rest of the recipe.
  • Spices: Spices like green chilies, curry leaves, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, turmeric powder and asafoetida are used in this simple breadfruit recipe.  These spices are easily available in any Indian grocery store.
  • Jaggery: Jaggery is optional, however adding little jaggery enhances the taste and flavour of the recipe.
  • Coconut: Freshly grated coconut is used in this recipe. If coconut is not available, you can still go ahead and cook breadfruit without coconut.
  • Oil: Any type of cooking oil can be used in this recipe.

How to make Konkani neer panas bhaji?

  • Add mustard seeds after oil gets heated.
  • After the mustard flutters, add cumin seeds and let them crackle.

Also try other breadfruit recipes Goan like:

  • Breadfruit rava fry
  • Raw jackfruit subzi

Breadfruit looks like jackfruit in appearance, but both are different. Jackfruit is a fruit and breadfruit is a vegetable.

Breadfruit interior is starchy cream to yellow texture like potato and cannot be eaten raw. Jackfruit on the other hand has yellow bulbs which can be eaten raw. Also, jackfruit has spikes on its outer skin whereas breadfruit may or may not have spikes.

Also try other stir fry recipes like:

  • Spiny gourd subzi
  • Red leafy amaranth stir fry
  • Carrot and peas stir fry
  • Malabar spinach stir fry
  • Pumpkin subzi

How to cut breadfruit?

Discard the outer skin and middle core, then cut the breadfruit it small pieces. Immediately after cutting transfer the chopped breadfruit in water to avoid discoloration. Refer to this video to know how to cut some breadfruit.

How to eat some breadfruit?

After cutting some breadfruit, it should be cooked before it is eaten. Never eat a raw breadfruit. Chopped breadfruit can be grilled, roasted, shallow fried or deep fried. You can try different jeev kadgi recipes like Palapanasa talsani or fanas ki subzi. You can also add it to vegetarian pulao.

How to serve breadfruit bhaji ?

Serve this neerpanas bhaji with rice, raw mango curry, potato rava fry, sol kadi and pickle for an authentic Goan meal.

Is it same as jackfruit? (*wondering*)
And those tiny balls – are those breadfruit seeds?

    Hi Nisha,

Breadfruits is similar to jackfruit. Looks same as jackfruit, but are smaller then that. You can google and check the same.
