Rava Fried Mackerel

Rava Fried Mackerel is a Goan fish fry recipe in which marinated mackerel is coated with rice flour and rava (semolina) and is shallow fried. Mackerel is also known as bangda or bangada in Goa which is a small coastal state in India. This Goan bangda fry recipe is an easy and delicious crispy pan-fried mackerel recipe. What does mackerel fish taste like?

Mackerel has a strong flavour. Its meat is soft, moist and flaky. The outer dark band may be removed to get a milder flavour. This can be removed from cooked fish while eating too. The raw fish is grey in colour. It is very oily. After cooking, the fish gets firm and turns off-white. You can eat the skin of mackerel of mackerel or remove it by rubbing it with thumb.

How to eat mackerel fish?

Mackerel fish can be cooked in different ways. Bangada fry and bangda curry are the most common forms to cook the mackerel. We also make different types of mackerel recipes like stuffed mackerel Goan style, mackerel pickle, mackerel uddamethi, etc. Mackerel can also be baked, steamed or grilled.

Rawa Fried Mackerels

Health benefits of mackerel:

Mackerel is oily and rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Consumption of this fish helps prevents heart disease, lowers risk of diabetes, strengthens immune system and helps in management of arthritis, lowers the risk of some cancers, controls blood pressure levels, lowers bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol. ย There are numerous health benefits of eating mackerel and the above listed are just a few.

Ingredients to make bangda rava fry:

  • Mackerel: Use fresh, firm mackerel to make this mackerel fry recipe.
  • Spice powders: Turmeric powder and red chili powder are the spice powders used in this fried mackerel recipe.
  • Flour: For coating mackerel fish, we use red chili powder and turmeric powder.
  • Oil: Use coconut oil or any type of vegetable oil for shallow frying the mackerel.

Instructions to makeย  rawa fried mackerel or bangda fry Goan style:

  • Clean the mackerel and cut into 2 or 3 pieces. I use whole mackerel with head discarded to make pan fried whole mackerel.
  • Marinate the fish by applying turmeric and red chili powder and salt and keep aside for 15 minutes.
  • In a plate, mix flours, spice powders and salt.
  • Coat the marinated mackerel in prepared spiced flour.
  • Heat the frying pan and shallow fry the rava coated mackerel on both sides till they are crispy.

This rava fried mackerel can be served with Goan fish curry, dry mackerel kismoor, prawns pickle and ridge gourd subzi. Don’t forget to serve kokum kadi to make a complete Goan meal.

Rava Fried Mackerel

Rava fried mackerels is a Goan fish fry recipe in which marinated mackerel is coated with rice flour and rava (semolina) and is shallow fried. This Goan bangda fry recipe is an easy and delicious crispy pan-fried mackerel recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 kg mackerel
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup rawa / semolina
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 2 tablespoon oil

For Marinating:

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Clean and cut the mackerels into 2 or 3 pieces. You can use them whole too with the head cut and stomach gutted.

Marinate the mackerels:

  • Place the mackerel pieces in a bowl.
  • Apply salt, turmeric and chili powder to it.
  • Mix well and keep aside for 15 minutes.

For frying:

  • Mix the rice flour, rawa, pinch of salt, 1/4 teaspoon each of turmeric powder and red chili powder.
  • Coat the marinated mackerel in prepared spiced flour.
  • Heat the frying pan and spread 1 tablespoon oil.
  • Place the fish on the frying pan and fry on low flame.
  • After 5 minutes flip to other side.
  • Fry them for 15 minutes.
  • They are done when they turn brownish.

Notes

  • Marinated mackerels can be stored in freezer overnight or even for upto 2 days. Just thaw and shallow fry.
