Today’s recipe is Drumstick dal. I have been making different types of dal everyday. My daughter loves dal and rice and hence I prepare it in different ways by adding different types of vegetables. Adding different vegetables like palak, drumsticks, tomatoes, onion, capsicum, etc. makes it nutritious and is a good way to cheat the kid to eat health food.
Not just for kids but adults too can reap health benefits of drumsticks and dal by eating drumstick dal. Drumsticks are rich in proteins and minerals and are extremely healthy. Since it is rich in calcium and iron and vitamins, consumption of drumsticks helps build strong bones. It purifies blood, improves immune system and helps in digestion. Lentils such as toor dal are also rich in iron and proteins. Our diet should always be balanced.
Most of the time women have iron deficiency. This might be caused due to increased iron demand or decreased iron intake. Iron is an important mineral which is needed by the body for haemoglobin. Lack of iron in body causes anaemia. Number of factors like pregnancy, monthly periods, chronic kidney disease, improper diet, gastrointestinal blood loss or conditions like malabsorption cause anaemia. Hence it is important that we women eat a balanced diet which is rich in proteins, vitamins, calcium, iron and other nutrients.
So do cook healthy recipes like this drumstick dal, green beans stir fry, egg and broccoli burji, etc. and reap all the health benefits. Friends, if you have a unique iron rich recipe, do share it and participant in the Iron Chef contest and they stand a chance to get featured in Femina, the leading women’s magazine, as a Celeb Chef.
When you go through the recipe, you will notice that I have boiled dal and drumsticks separately. That is because, if I pressure cook dal and drumsticks together, drumsticks will become over-cooked and mashy. Boiling it separately ensures that drumsticks don’t become mashy. I have also added tadka in same pan. You can use a separate tadka pan and add tadka to dal which is in cooker. Serve this drumstick dal with rice and subzi.
