Green Peas Stir Fry

Simple, easy, and tasty green peas fry or green peas stir fry is an easy cooking idea. This is also known as matar fry recipe and can be made for weeknight dinners. You can also serve it as an appetizer or starter recipe. This green pea masala fry is vegan and gluten free and is yum food. It can be made with fresh green peas or frozen green peas.

This easy healthy recipe can be served with rice, rotis or bread. Stir fried green peas tastes good with naan too. You can also make it in the morning and pack it in the kids lunch box. It can also be added as a filling in sandwich just like this sprouts sandwich. 

What goes in making stir fry green peas?

  • Green peas: This masala fried green peas can be made with fresh or frozen green peas. The taste will not change if this recipe is made with fresh or frozen peas.
  • Onion: I have used red onion in this green bean stir fry recipe. You may use any type of onion. Spring onion can also be used without the green part.
  • Tomatoes: Use firm, fresh tomatoes to make this easy pea stir fry.
  • Spices: Various simple and easily available spices are used in this recipe.1 green chili is added for heat. I have added chopped ginger and garlic. Apart from these, I have added turmeric powder, cumin powder and coriander powder which enhances the taste and flavor of this masala fried peas recipe.

How to cook stir fry green peas?

  • Heat a pan and add oil.

  • After oil gets heated, add onion and saute till onion turns pinkish.

  • Add finely chopped green chili and mix well.

  • Add finely chopped ginger and minced garlic and mix well.

  • Cook till raw aroma of garlic disappears.
  • Add chopped tomato and mix well. Cook till tomato turns soft.

  • Add the spice powders namely โ€“ turmeric powder, cumin powder and coriander powder and mix well.

  • Add fresh or frozen green peas and mix well.

  • Add 1/4th cup water and mix well.

  • Add salt to taste, stir and continue cooking stirring occasionally.

  • Green peas will shrink after getting cooked.

  • Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.

How long to stir fry green peas?

If you are cooking frozen green peas, then cook till they appear fully thawed. For fresh green peas, cook till they appear shrunk.

How to cook dry green peas recipes?

If you are using dry green peas, soak them overnight or for 6 hours in water. After soaking, drain the water and add the soaked green peas in pressure cooker along with salt and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles. After pressure cooking these pressure-cooked peas can be used to make any recipe like curries or stir fries. You can try the same recipe as this black eyed peas curry.

Are green peas healthy?

Green peas are healthy. They are a good source of Vitamin C,E zinc and some antioxidants which strengthen our immune system. Also the minerals and phytonutrients found in green peas helps in keeping eyes healthy and also protect against certain cancers. The Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids found in green peas helps in heart health.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups green peas
  • 1 medium sized onion julienned
  • 1 green chili finely chopped
  • 1/2 tablespoon ginger finely chopped
  • ยฝ tablespoon garlic minced
  • 1 medium sized tomato chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • To taste salt
  • Few coriander leaves for garnish

  • Heat a pan and add oil.
  • After oil gets heated, add onion and saute till onion turns pinkish.
  • Add finely chopped green chili and mix well.
  • Add finely chopped ginger and minced garlic and mix well.
