Moolyacho ross is a mildly spiced vegan radish curry made with radish, lentils (split pigeon peas), onion, spices and coconut. If you don’t add onion to this radish and lentil curry, it becomes no onion no garlic radish curry. In Goan language, radish is known as “moolo” and “ross” means curry. Hence this vegan Goan radish curry is known as moolyacho ross.

Goan radish curry

Goan Moolyacho Ross or Goan Radish Curry is a traditional Goan preparation which I learnt from my mom. Since my dad is a pure vegetarian, mom made this curry to eat along with rice. Steps to prepare Goan moolyacho ross is similar to Goan drumstick curry or sangacho ross, only difference is that black peppercorns are not added to radish curry. Let us see the ingredients that go in making Goan style radish curry with coconut:

  • Radish: Radish is the star ingredient. Use fresh, unbruised white or pink radish to make this Goan vegan curry.
  • Lentils: Split pigeon peas also known as toor dal is used in making this Goan ross.
  • Onion: Onion is used in this radish recipe. If you want to make no onion no garlic radish curry, just don’t add onion, follow the rest of the ingredients and steps as mentioned.
  • Coconut: Freshly grated coconut is used in this moolya ross.
  • Spices: Spices like dry red chilies, green chili, turmeric powder, coriander seeds and tamarind are used to make this traditional Goan vegetarian curry.
  • Jaggery: A little bit of jaggery is added for enhancing the taste and also because radish is slightly pungent in taste. You can add cane sugar or any other sugar if jaggery is unavailable.
