Pepper Idlis

Pepper idli is a South Indian pepper flavoured rice cake. The idlis are made by steaming batter made of fermented black lentils and rice. They are then tossed in curry leaves, onion, black pepper mixture and chopped coriander leaves. Best made with left-over day old idlis.

Pepper Idlis is an easy recipe which can be prepared with left over idlis. This can be served as a healthy evening snack. Every bite of these idli fry are filled with deliciousness. They are very easy to cook. You can make it with either fresh idlis.

How to make rice idlis?

Soak rice and black lentils for 4 hours. Grind into a course mixture. Ferment them for 8 hours or overnight. Next day or after fermentation, add the batter to idli moulds and steam. You can refer to this idli recipe to make healthy South Indian idlis.

Ingredients to make this healthy idli snack:

  • Idli: You can use freshly made idlis or left over idlis to make this delicious recipe.
  • Black pepper powder: Black pepper powder adds the much-needed spicy flavour. You can adjust this as per your taste. If you are making this recipe for kids, then less amount of this spice.
  • Curry leaves: Curry leaves bring out the earthy flavour in this recipe giving it a South Indian flavour, look and feel.
  • Onion: Chopped red onion is used in this recipe. If you are making a no onion no garlic pepper idlis, just avoid adding onion and proceed with the recipe.
  • Green chilies: Green chilies are added for extra spiciness. This is an optional ingredient.

How to prepare pepper idlis?

  • Cut the left-over idlis into bite sized pieces.
  • Heat a kadai, add oil or ghee.
  • Add curry leaves, slit green chili and chopped onion and fry till onion turns pinkish.
  • Add back pepper powder and coriander leaves and mix well.
  • Adjust salt to taste.

If you like this recipe, do try other idli varieties like millet idli, oats idli, green moong idli with vegetables, rava idli. Any of these idlis can also be used to make this spicy idli recipe too.

Variations to make pepper idli fry recipe:

You can make healthy mini idlis and then use them to make delicious idli pepper fry recipe. Kids will love to carry mini idlis in their snack box.

What to serve with pepper flavoured idli?

You can serve South Indian sambar with groundnut chutney with this idli recipe. I just love to eat them as it with a spicy and chatpatta pepper flavour.

Ingredients

  • 8 idlis or 18 mini idlis
  • 2 sprigs curry leaves
  • 1 medium sized onion finely chopped
  • 4 tablespoon coriander leaves chopped
  • 2 green chilies slit
  • 3 tablespoon black pepper powder
  • 2 tablespoon ghee/oil
  • To taste salt

Instructions

Let us make the pepper idlis from left-over idlis:

  • Cut the left-over idlis into bite sized pieces and keep aside.
  • Heat a kadai, add oil or ghee.
  • Add chopped onion and fry till onion turns pinkish.
  • Add curry leaves and slit green chilies and fry for few seconds.
  • Add chopped coriander leaves and mix.
  • Add black pepper powder and salt to taste and mix well.
  • Now add the idli pieces or mini idlis and mix it with the black pepper powder.
  • Ensure that the pepper powder coats the idlis properly.
  • Serve it hot.
