Karmalache Goad Mel is a star fruit recipe. Star fruit or carambola is cooked with jaggery and spices to make a sweet, sour and mildly spicy chutney or pickle.

Star fruit or Carambola sweet and spicy pickle also known as karmalache goad mel is a traditional Goan recipe. This star fruit chutney Indian recipe is made with jaggery and is a healthy, preservative free recipe.

What is Goad mel?

“Goad Mel” or “God Mel”  or “Goad Lonche” or “God Lonche” – there are several names for this recipe. “Goad” or “God” means sweet and or “Lonche” means pickle. “Mel” means a mixture. In this recipe context, this god mel is a mixture of jaggery, star fruit pieces, green chilies, chili powder and spices like asafoetida, mustard seeds, black pepper, fenugreek seeds, etc.

We also make similar recipe with raw mango (Goad mel with raw mango) and hog plums. This sweet and sour chutney can be preserved for several weeks in fridge.

What are the health benefits of star fruit?

Star fruit has number of health benefits. It is rich in vitamin C. It is anti-inflammatory and has antioxidant properties. It boosts immune system and is good for heart health. Apart from this there are number of health benefits.

How to serve Goan style star fruit sweet and sour chutney?

This recipe can be served with chapatis or puris or bread. It tastes best with chapatis or puris.

Other preservative free recipes of jams and preserves to have with chapati or poori, specially for breakfast –

  • Goan banana halwa (Kelyacho halwo)
  • Goad mel with raw mango
  • Mango jam (ambyacho halwo)
  • Pineapple jam (ansacho halwo)

Ingredients to make star fruit recipe Indian:

  1. Star fruit: Use fresh unripe star fruit to make this recipe.
  2. Jaggery: Jaggery or molasses is used for adding sweetness in this recipe.
  3. Spices: Spices like mustard seeds, black pepper seeds, fenugreek seeds, asafoetida and red chili powder are used for seasoning the recipe and for adding a spicy taste.
  4. Green chilies: Use fresh green chilies in this recipe.
  5. Sugar: Along with jaggery, we add 1 tablespoon sugar. This also acts as a preservative.

Goan Karmalache Goad Lonche

How to make star fruit chutney or Goan style karmalache goad mel?

  1. Wash the starfruits, peel the sharp edges from the 5 pentagonal sides and cut into ½ inch pieces.
  2. Pressure cook, the chopped starfruits and green chilies.
  3. In a separate pan, mix jaggery in water and keep aside.
  4. Make the tempering ready – in a small pan say tadka pan, add oil, asafoetida, fenugreek seeds, black pepper seeds and mustard seeds After cooling, crush the mixture with a mortar and pestle or mixer or blender. Keep it aside.
  5. Take a deep bottom pan and mix the jaggery mixture along with the water with the star fruit mixture from the pressure cooker. Simmer on low flame.
  6. Continue to cook till the mixture gets reduced to 1/2 by stirring occasionally to avoid burning.
  7. Add sugar and red chili powder.
  8. Adjust salt.
  9. Add the ground masala for seasoning and stir well.

Star Fruit Sweet And Spicy Pickle | Goan Style Karmalache Goad Mel

Karmalache Goad Mel is a star fruit recipe. Star fruit or carambola is cooked with jaggery and spices to make a sweet, sour and mildly spicy chutney or pickle.

Ingredients

  • 10 star fruits
  • 2 cups jaggery
  • 2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper seeds
  • 1 teaspoon asafoetida / hing
  • ½ teaspoon fenugreek seeds / methi
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 green chilies slit
  • 2 cups water
  • To taste salt

Instructions

  • Wash the star fruits, peel the sharp edges from the 5 pentagonal sides and cut into ½ inch pieces.
  • In a pressure cooker, add the chopped star fruits, slit green chilies and 1/2 cup water. Cook for one whistle and switch of the gas/heat.
  • In another bowl, mix the jaggery in1 cup water and keep aside.
  • For the tempering, take a small pan like tadka pan.
  • Add 1 tablespoon oil and let it get heated. First add the asafoetida, fenugreek seeds, black pepper seeds and lastly add mustard seeds. Let mustard seeds flutter. Switch off the gas.
  • After cooling, crush the mixture with a mortar and pestle and keep aside.
  • Take a deep bottom pan and mix the jaggery and water mixture with the pressure-cooked star fruit. Switch on the gas and let it simmer on low flame.
  • Continue to cook till the mixture gets reduced to 1/2 by stirring occasionally to avoid burning.
  • Add 1 tablespoon sugar and red chili powder.
  • Adjust salt.
  • Add the ground masala for seasoning and stir well.

Notes

  • Use unripe star fruits in this recipe.
