This easy avocado guacamole is a must-have for every snack table, taco night, or healthy meal prep plan. Chunky guacamole made with avocado, tomato, onion, and herbs, served in a pink plate with crispy nacho chips, placed on a rustic teal wooden background.

Guacamole is a traditional Mexican dip where mashed ripe avocados are mixed with ingredients like onion, tomato, chili (or jalapeño), lime or lemon juice, salt, and herbs like cilantro. The avocado gives guacamole its creamy texture, rich flavour, and signature green colour.

Ingredients to make the best recipe for guacamole with one avocado:

  • Avocado: The creamy, nutrient-rich base that gives guacamole its signature texture and heart-healthy fats.
  • Onion: Adds a sharp, Savory crunch that balances the creaminess.
  • Tomato: Brings freshness, juiciness, and a mild tang.
  • Jalapeño Pepper: Provides a kick of heat and depth of flavour.
  • Lemon Juice: Adds zesty brightness and helps prevent browning.
  • Cilantro: Infuses herbaceous, citrusy notes that lift the whole dip.
  • Salt & Pepper: Essential seasonings that enhance and unify all Flavors.

👩‍🍳 How to Make Guacamole at Home

  • Step 1: Mash the Avocado
Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh into a bowl. Use a fork to mash it to your desired consistency — chunky or smooth.
  • Step 2: Mix the Veggies
Add chopped onion, tomato, and jalapeño (adjust heat to your taste).
  • Step 3: Add Zest & Seasoning
Stir in lemon juice, salt, and freshly ground pepper.
  • Step 4: Garnish & Serve
Top with chopped coriander or parsley. Serve immediately or chill for 15 minutes.

Health benefits of avocado:

Avocados are a nutrient-rich superfood packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, fibre, and essential vitamins like E, K, and B-complex. They support heart and brain health, aid digestion, reduce inflammation, and help keep you full longer making them a smart choice for weight management and blood sugar control. Plus, their antioxidants promote healthy skin and hair, making avocados both delicious and nourishing.

How to prevent guacamole from browning?

Prevent guacamole from browning (oxidizing), try these proven methods:

🥣 1. Cover with Plastic Wrap (Cling Film)

  • Press plastic wrap directly on the surface of the guacamole.
  • This prevents air contact, which causes browning.

🍋 2. Add Extra Citrus

  • Mix in a bit more lemon or lime juice (natural antioxidants).
  • Citrus slows oxidation and adds flavour.

💧 3. Smooth & Add a Water Barrier

  • Smooth the guacamole surface.
  • Gently pour a thin layer of water on top.
  • Cover and refrigerate. When ready to eat, drain the water and stir.
  • This works well for up to 2 days and does not affect taste.

🥑 4. Store in an Airtight Container

  • Use a container that fits the amount of guac with minimal air space.
  • Combine this with plastic wrap for double protection.

🧅 Bonus Trick: Use Onion!

  • Place a few slices of raw onion on top of the guacamole before sealing.
  • Onions release sulphur compounds that help preserve the green colour.

🕒 Shelf Life

Even with these tips, guacamole is best enjoyed fresh or within 24–48 hours.

Avocado guacamole gets its signature vibrant green colour from the creamy flesh of ripe avocados. This natural green hue not only makes it visually appealing but also signals freshness and high nutrient content—especially antioxidants like lutein, which support eye and skin health. Keep your guacamole beautifully green, add a splash of lemon juice and cover it tightly to prevent browning.

Here is how to choose the best avocado for guacamole:

🥑 1. Check the Colour

  • Ripe Hass avocados usually have dark green to black skin.
  • Avoid light green ones — they are underripe.

✋ 2. Gently Squeeze

  • Hold the avocado in your palm (do not press with fingertips).
  • It should yield slightly to pressure but not feel mushy.
  • If the avocado feels firm and does not yield to gentle pressure, it is underripe and not yet ready for guacamole.
  • If it feels very soft or has noticeable dents, it is overripe and may have brown spots inside.
  • If it yields slightly when gently squeezed, it is perfectly ripe and ideal for making guacamole.

🎯 3. Look at the Stem

  • Gently flick off the small stem nub at the top.
  • If the stem comes off easily and the flesh underneath is green, the avocado is ripe and ready to use.
  • If the area under the stem is brown or mushy, the avocado is overripe and may be spoiled inside.
  • If the stem is hard to remove, the avocado is still underripe and needs more time to ripen.

🛒 Pro Tip for Meal Prep

  • Buy a few unripe avocados (bright green and firm) if prepping ahead.
  • Let them ripen at room temperature, then refrigerate to slow further ripening.

🥣 How to Serve Guacamole?

  • With tortilla chips or veggie sticks
  • As a dip for nachos or quesadillas
  • On top of tacos, burritos, or grain bowls
  • Spread on whole grain toast for a nutritious breakfast.

📦 Storage Tips

  • Keep guacamole from browning, press cling wrap tightly over the surface and refrigerate. Best eaten within 24 hours.

📌 Extra Tip:

  • For extra creaminess, add a spoonful of Greek yogurt (if not vegan). For a smoky twist, mix in a bit of chipotle chili.
