Velli Fish Fry | Goan Style Anchovies or White Sardines Fry

Crispy fried anchovies or white sardines fry or rava fried vellyo is a delicious fish fry recipe from the small Indian state – Goa. Velli fish is also known as white sardines. Some people call it silver fish or silver belly fish. This can be served as fish fry sides. This is also known as vellyo or vellori. Anchovies are marinated with Indian spices like red chili powder and turmeric powder, coated with flour and shallow fried in oil.

How to clean anchovies or how to clean velli fish?

The anchovies fry recipe gets ready in 15 minutes. The only pain lies in cleaning the small fish. Just take a pair of scissors, gently scrape the scales, cut the tail, fins and head, clean the belly and the fish is ready to eat. Marinate it and store in freezer, thaw, and it’s ready to cook.

What are the ingredients used to make crispy fried anchovies recipe?

  • 10-20 Anchovies / Velli (in Konkani)

For Marination:

  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For Coating:

  • 2 tablespoon rava or semolina
  • 1 tablespoon rice flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoon oil

How to make crispy fried anchovies or Goan rava fried vellyo?

  • Clean the fish carefully, by cutting off the head. De-scale them and clean the internals. Do not make small pieces, just cut the head and de-scale.
    Apply the ingredients meant for marination – red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Keep aside for 30 minutes.
  • Take a plate and mix the ingredients meant for coating the fish before frying- rice flour, rava or semolina, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt.
  • Heat a frying pan and add oil. Once the oil gets slightly heated, coat each marinated fish in rice flour and semolina(rava) mixture and place it in the frying pan.
  • Drizzle some oil on top of the fish.
  • Shallow fry on both sides. This should normally take around 10-15 minutes.
