Masala Papad is an easy starter recipe which can be made with deep fried papad or roasted papad. This is normally made with deep fried papads topped with tangy and spicy mixed vegetables. This is my favorite crispy starter recipe as it needs very less time and can be made in a jiffy specially when you have unexpected guests at home.

Masala papad

Masala papad is another way in which you can ensure that you child eats some healthy vegetables in the form of salad. You can cut the deep fried papad into squares or triangles or any shapes before deep frying them. Also use garlic, black pepper or chili flavored papads.

Also try other appetizer recipes like:

  • Raw green banana cutlet
  • Kurkuri bhindi
  • Chicken momos
  • Chicken 65
  • Reshmi kebab
  • Honey chili potatoes

What is a papad?

Papad, also called as papadam or appalam, is a crispy thin flatbread or wafer, more like a cracker. It is like a tortilla but made with black gram flour and rice or tapioca or lentils and spices. This is then either roasted or fried before eating.

Always remember to make this masala papad recipe on time, just before serving. That is because the vegetable topping will make the papads soft and soggy. You can prepare the vegetable topping mix and keep it aside and just before serving, deep fry or roast the papad, top it with the prepared mix and serve.

Let us see the ingredients used for making papad topped with tangy and spicy vegetable mix:

  • Papad: You can use any flavored papad like garlic papad, black pepper papad, chili papad or even prawn papad or our favorite Goan tarvoti papad.
  • Vegetables: In this recipe, I have used different vegetables like onion, tomato, capsicum and carrot. You can also add some green moong sprouts and make it healthier.
  • Lemon: I have added bit of lemon juice in this recipe to make it tangy.
  • Spices: Different spice powders like red chili powder and chaat masala are used for enhancing the taste.
  • Coriander leaves: Few chopped coriander leaves are added for garnish.
  • Oil: Oil is used for deep frying the papad. Any type of cooking oil can be used. Oil is not needed if you will use roasted papad.

Fried masala papad

Steps to make easy masala papad recipe:

  • Deep fry the papads in sufficient oil. Remove and drain them on a tissue paper.
  • In a mixing bowl, add finely chopped onion, finely chopped tomato, finely chopped capsicum and grated carrot.
  • Add lemon juice and salt to taste.
  • Take 2 tablespoon of the above vegetable mixture and spread it on the deep fried papads.
  • Sprinkle red chili powder, chat masala and chopped coriander leaves on this and serve immediately.

First time, I had masala papad in my childhood at a restaurant in Goa and ever since then I loved them. We never made this recipe at home, but whenever mom made deep fried papads, I asked her to make mixed vegetable salad and topped salad over the papad and loved to have it. I would top any type of salad, even mixed sprouts salad on top of papad and eat it.

  • 2 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Few Coriander leaves for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon chaat masala
  • To taste salt
  • 2 cups oil for deep frying

Instructions

  • Deep fry the papads in sufficient oil. Remove and drain them on a tissue paper.
  • In a mixing bowl, add finely chopped onion, finely chopped tomato, finely chopped capsicum and grated carrot.
  • Add lemon juice and salt to taste.
  • Take 2 tablespoon of the above vegetable mixture and spread it on the deep fried papads.

Notes

Instead of sprinkling the red chili powder and chaat masala, you can mix it in the vegetable mix and top on the papad too. I simply used it as a garnish as the little one does not like very spicy stuff.
