Momos are native of Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, Ladakh in North India, Sikkim, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh in North East India and Darjeeling in East India. Momo is similar to Chinese baozi, jiaozi, and mantou, Mongolian buuz, Japanese gyoza, Korean mandu and Turkic manti, but is influenced by Indian cuisine and made with Indian herbs and spices.

How is a momo prepared?

Momo outer covering is made with all purpose flour dough. The momo is stuffed with ground or minced meat filling. Nowadays, momos are made with ground meat, tofu, paneer, vegetables like carrots, cabbage, flat beans, eggs, prawns, etc. This vegetable momo is a must try recipe too.

Different ways to steam momos:

In a pressure cooker:

You can steam momos in a pressure cooker by adding water and placing momos in an idli stand. Remove the weight or whistle.

Using a kadai:

Take a kadai. Place a steel bowl or katori. Add water such that the water level does not cross the height of steel bowl. Over the steel bowl, place a plate and add momos. Cover the kadai and steam.

Momo steamer:

Use a traditional momo steamer to steam momos.

What are the different momo varieties?

There are two types of momos – steamed and fried. The fried version can include deep fried or pan fried. Pan fried momos are also known as Kothey momo. Momos can be added to soup to make soup momo in which a steamed momo is immersed in meat or vegetable broth. Momos can also be served in hot and spicy sauce. This is known as C-momo or chili momo.

Momo chicken is very popular in North East India and is a popular street food there. Nowadays, these momos are being sold as a street food in various other places in India too. Momos are served as appetizers in restaurants.
