Ganesh Chaturthi is incomplete without Modaks, the favourite sweet of Lord Ganesha. While traditional steamed Ukadiche Modak is divine, sometimes we need a quick and easy option. That is where this Instant Mava Modak recipe comes in!

These Mava Modaks (also called Milk Powder Modaks) are the perfect solution! Soft, melt-in-the-mouth, and ready in just 10 minutes, they make the ideal Ganesh Chaturthi prasad for Lord Ganesha.

Best part? This is a no khoya modak recipe – made with milk powder, sugar, ghee, saffron, and cardamom, these soft, melt-in-the-mouth modaks are ready in just 10 minutes. No khoya, no condensed milk – quite simple ingredients from your kitchen. Perfect as prasad or a festive sweet!

Ingredients for mava modak (for mava modak without khoya)

  • Milk powder – the main base that gives soft and rich texture to the modaks.
  • Milk – helps bind the mixture into a smooth dough.
  • Sugar – adds the perfect sweetness.
  • Ghee – enhances flavour and gives shine and richness.
  • Cardamom powder – adds a warm, aromatic touch.
  • Saffron strands – infuse a festive golden colour and subtle aroma.
  • Silver varak – optional garnish for a royal look.

How to make instant mava modak (milk powder modak)

  1. Heat ghee in a non-stick pan.
  2. Add milk and stir on low flame.
  3. Mix in milk powder gradually, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
  4. Add sugar, saffron strands, and cardamom powder. Mix well.
  5. Stir till mixture thickens and leaves the sides of the pan.
  6. Cool slightly, then shape into modaks using a modak mould or hands.
  7. Decorate with silver varak if desired.

That is, it! Your soft, melt-in-the-mouth milk powder modaks are ready in just 10 minutes.

Variations of mava modak

  • Dry fruit mava modak – Add finely chopped almonds, cashews, and pistachios.
  • Chocolate mava modak – Mix in cocoa powder or melted chocolate.
  • Rose mava modak – Add rose essence and garnish with dried rose petals.
  • Kesar mava modak – Use extra saffron for a rich golden look.
  • Coconut mava modak – Mix in desiccated coconut for a twist.
  • Stuffed mava modak – Fill with gulkand, dates, or dry fruit mixture.

Shelf Life & Storage Tips

  • Room temperature: Stays fresh for up to 3 days in a cool, dry place.
  • Refrigeration: Store in an airtight container for 5–6 days.
  • Freezer: Not recommended, as texture may turn grainy.
  • Serving tip: If refrigerated, let modaks sit at room temperature for 20–30 minutes before serving.
