Plantain Cutlets

Today I tried an innovative and healthy recipe using plantains or raw banana called plantain cutlets or raw banana cutlet. They are also known as kacche kele ki tikki in India. Kacche kele means raw banana and tikki means cutlet. This under 30-minute healthy snack recipe is a must try.

Plantain cutlets

Normally cutlets are made up of potato, but I replaced the potato filling with a spicy and tangy plantain filling. I have added red chili powder and green chilies to make it spicy and tamarind paste for making it tangy.

These raw banana tikki taste even better than the raw banana subzi and can be served either at lunch as a side or during snacks time. If you have a fussy eater who normally does not eat raw banana stir fry, you can make these plantain cutlets and ensure that he/she gets proper nutrition.

Can we have these cutlets with raw banana while fasting?

If you want to make these kacche kele ki tikki for fast, just donโ€™t add onion and garlic. Rest of the ingredients can be used as it is.

Other raw banana recipes:

  • Raw banana subzi
  • Raw banana fry

Ingredients that go in the recipe of raw banana cutlet:

  • Plantain: Fresh plantain or green raw banana is the main ingredient used in making this healthy snack.
  • Onion: Finely chopped red onion is added to the mashed raw banana.
  • Spices: Spices like red chili powder, turmeric powder and cumin seeds are used in this recipe. Marble sized ball of tamarind or tamarind paste is also added to make tangy cutlets. All these ingredients can be found in any Asian or Indian grocery store.
  • Chili: Finely chopped green chili is added in this recipe. It is optional can be added if you want more heat in the cutlets.
  • Garlic: Minced garlic is added in this tikki recipe for adding flavour. Along with this, a little amount of ginger paste and garlic paste is also added in the recipe.

For coating the cutlets:

We can use rava or semolina to coat the cutlets. If rava is not available, breadcrumbs can be used.

Oil: Oil is used for shallow frying the cutlets. You can use any type of oil like rice bran oil or coconut oil or vegetable oil.
