Andhra Style Gongura Dal

September 23, 2013 by Raksha Kamat

My hubby loves Andhra style food. Because it is extremely spicy and delicious. When I first came to Bangalore after marraige, he took me to Maharaja Hotel in Koramangala just to eat Andhra food. I was hesitant to eat Andhra food. He told me to try and ordered two plates of Andhra veg thali. Believe me I just loved that food. Specially the Gongura Dal, Andhra style chilly chicken, etc. Just name it almost each and every dish from Andhra food turns delicious.
I learnt this Andhra Style Gongura Dal from my next door neighbor who was from Andhra. She was a tenant in our apartment. Now she has shifted to Salem after her husband’s transfer. She is not here, but whatever she taught me will always remain with me.
India is a land of diversity. In every state the language and cooking style differs. This is what makes India a rich country. I wish I can master each and every dish from the traditional kitchens of various states from India. I am sure one fine day my wish will come true.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup toor dal/lentils
1 bunch gongura/sorel leaves
1 green chili

For seasoning:
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
A pinch of hing/asafoetida
5-8 curry leaves
2 red chilies
4 garlic flakes
1 tsp turmeric powder

Procedure:
Remove the leaves from the sorrel bunch. Wash and chop them. Boil them in water. Drain the water and retain the boiled leaves.

Now wash the lentils. Add them to pressure cooker. Add 1 1/2 cup water, green chilly and boiled sorrel leaves to the dal in pressure cooker and pressure cook for 4-5 whistles.

Now in a kadai, temper add oil and all the ingredients meant for seasoning. Then add the dal from pressure cooker and mix well.
Add salt to taste.
